Michigan Patent of the Month – January 2023

Magna Electronics Inc, a global leader in automated driving technologies, has patented their biometric security system. This new system offers a level of security that was previously not possible with traditional key fobs or keys.

The design consists of a remote device with a couple of biometric sensors and an electronic control unit (ECU). One biometric sensor is positioned in the vehicle while the other is in the handle. The first biometric sensor captures data representative of the identity of the user of the remote device and the ECU determines whether the user is an authorized user of the vehicle. If the user is authorized, the ECU unlocks the door of the vehicle, allowing the user to access the interior.

Once the user is in the vehicle, the second biometric sensor captures data representative of the user’s identity. The ECU processes this data to determine whether the user is an authorized operator of the vehicle. If the user is an authorized operator, the ECU can start the vehicle, maneuver the vehicle, or even perform a self-drive function.

This new system is not only secure but also incredibly convenient. Users no longer have to worry about carrying a key or remembering a combination. Instead, their biometrics serve as their identification and authorization to access and operate the vehicle. This system offers a new level of security and convenience, making our lives easier and safer.
