Missouri Patent of the Month – August 2021

Parents know how difficult it is to get their young kids to go to bed… and stay there. Happy Tykes, Inc. has developed their reward clock to help in this sleep training, improving a child’s ability to sleep through the night.

The device is based on a “Pali” clock which helps to train a kid to know when it’s acceptable to get out of bed. The clock uses a variety of reward functions, with visual cues, sounds, and night lights to help interact with the child. At a set time, the visual timer begins counting down. Once the timer ends, the clock lights up and a reward drawer unlocks. The child gets the reward at that time, knows they did something good by remaining in the room, and can go find their parents. Typically, this timer starts shortly before the child’s wake time, so that the child doesn’t leave early. The clock can be shaped to suit the child’s interests – from animals to toys. If animal shaped, the ears of the animal can be used on buttons, controlling the alarm, starting nap time, or turning off/on the night light etc. The clock can be bluetooth connected and controlled by the parent’s smartphone.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify).
