Missouri Patent of the Month – June 2022

Bone joint prostheses are designed to replicate the movement of a normal and healthy joint. They are a common solution to aid patients who suffer from arthritis or damaged joints. Unfortunately, these prosthetics can still face wear and tear and may eventually need replacement themselves. As they are worn down, they are known to shed particles which can lead to inflammation and further erosion of the natural bone. In order to limit the amount of wear, most recipients are asked to limit their range of motion in their day to day life.

Newtonoid Technologies, LLC has developed the next generation of joint prosthetic devices, with the aim of returning full articulation and range of motion to patients – without the fear of further damage.

Their biomechanical implant dissipates the forces applied to it with strategically placed damping mechanisms. A cushion can also be included within the cavity, depending on the type of joint, to further dissipate these forces. The damping mechanisms are designed with 3D nanostructures which create a suspension and dispersed evenly throughout the prosthetic for maximum effect.

By absorbing a greater amount of force and impact exerted, the prosthetic can allow a user to use full articulation and a full range of motion with less wear overall. In some versions, the company has incorporated their proprietary impact sensors which track if any impact forces surpass a threshold. If they do, the sensor can trigger an electric field to be applied to the implant. This causes the 3D nanostructures to stiffen in some capacity, reducing the effects of the force and protecting both the implant and natural bone.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
