Nebraska Patent of the Month – April 2021

While technology has advanced livestock raising practices, there are still many limitations. Most systems fall short on how much data they return to herdsmen or fail to monitor as frequently as needed. Monitoring should ideally track location, body temperatures, and movements to help inform animal health, predict growth, and reduce stress. Plenty of tasks involved in raising livestock are dirty and labor intensive with lots of contact between human and livestock. There has been a rising desire to limit the contact between humans and livestock in order to reduce the spread of disease. RealmFive, Inc. have designed a new livestock management system which aims to improve on these limitations.

The redesigned management system uses a gantry assembly and a controller. This system offers integrated features including power washing, feeding, branding, corralling, harvesting and so on. The gantry system is equipped with subcomponents and attachments that carry out these tasks, such as a pressure washing hose. These subcomponents can also incorporate sensors such as temperature, noise, light sensors and so on. As an application example, the gantry system could move to each pen and, using the sensors, monitor the location, movement, and temperature of each individual animal. This data is sent to a user interface so that herdsmen can be well informed on their herds location and health. The gantry system is controlled remotely, helping to reduce contact between humans and livestock. The system can move along support beams indoors or outdoors, and between facilities. RealmFive has designed their livestock management system to help herdsmen feel empowered over their data while making their lives easier.

Are you developing new software for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify).
