Nevada Patent of the Month – April 2021

Deepfakes are an increasing concern for many people. These use artificial intelligence (AI) to create convincing images, audios, and video hoaxes. The videos and audios are highly realistic, making it difficult to differentiate between fake or real which could have scary implications if used for the wrong purposes. Artificial Intelligence Foundation, Inc. (AI Foundation) wants to responsibly move the world forward with AI. In response to the rise of deepfakes, AI Foundation has developed a system capable of identifying fake audio content.

The system receives audio content and transforms it to determine a representation of the audio content. It then analyzes the transformed representation. The neural network doing the analysis searches to see if the audio content is , in any part, computer-generated. The system is also able to run a further analysis by comparing to existing, known-real audio if it’s available. For instance, if a potential deepfake audio of a celebrity surfaces, the system could compare against older audio files of that celebrity which are known to be real. The system could then attach a warning of “potential fake audio” to the content in order to inform listeners.

These efforts to ensure we can determine what is fake and what is real helps to prevent the spread of false or misleading information. It also helps to ensure we can maintain a certain level of belief in audio if there is a readily accessible way to verify it.

Are you developing new software for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
