Nebraska Patent of the Month – July 2022

Machine-to-machine (M2M) communications are used to facilitate the remote monitoring of various devices. Unfortunately, this technology has so far remained relatively expensive and takes a long time to develop and commercialize, making it difficult to keep them integratable with the latest technology. Signetik, LLC has worked towards overcoming these shortfalls in order to make M2M more accessible for the industry.

Recently, the company designed and patented a system-in-package (SiP) cellular assembly meant to improve M2M technology. This SiP assembly is meant to be used in end-products to measure other sensors. For instance, installing the SiP in an agriculture end-product would allow for the measurement of farm sensors.

The assembly is made of a multi-layer printed circuit board which is detachably connected to the end-product. The main board connects with an add-on board which can add additional sensors as needed. The main board receives commands from the network server, controlling the various sensors. These sensors are periodically read and the data sent back to the network. The system can be used in a range of industries – from agriculture to healthcare, payment processing to asset tracking. The add-on boards can be rapidly prototoyped as technology advances, ensuring the development and time to market can be reduced as much as possible. The SiP ensures that these connections are reliable and cost-effective, making the M2M communication industry more accessible.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
