Nevada Patent of the Month – November 2022

Industrial Security Solutions Corp. has been involved in protecting retail stores from theft loss for over 20 years. From anti-shoplifting solutions to CCTV product lines, the company combines creativity and security to reduce theft overall.

Recently, the company has developed a solution to protect travel mugs and cups. YETI® mugs have had a popularity boom recently. With popularity, comes theft. These metal vacuum cups are easy to steal, as tags are easily removed, and tags sitting within the metal cup might not trigger an alarm when passing over security sensors.

Industrial Security Solutions’ design is a smart anti-theft tag with not one, not two, but a four alarm functionality. The tag is tied from the bottom of a travel cup, like a YETI®, attached to the wall of the cup, and then inserted into the cup lid. The arm hook of the security tag slides through the opening in the lid. The downward force on the arm hook causes the power switch in the cover seat to turn on, effectively turning on the security tag.

If the tag passes over a security sensor at the door, an acousto-magnetic coil in the tag triggers the antenna at the door. This coil is not blocked by the metal container, ensuring the signal won’t be missed. If a shoplifter attempts to cut the cable, a circuit in the circuit board is triggered, initiating a sound alarm. If they try to remove the tag without cutting it, the change in distance between the anti-theft tag and the cup also triggers an alarm. Similarly, any damage to the tag will trigger an alarm. To further deter shoplifting, the alarm will not disengage until the tag is reassembled on the vacuum cup. Very few shoplifters are apt to steal an item that triggers a constant alarm.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify).
