New Hampshire Patent of the Month – November 2022

Power Lines are specially designed to run a range of cables across poles. Some of the cables are bare conductors and others are covered but, in any case, the cables must be spaced apart as a safety precaution. While a traditional spacer can maintain space between cables, rarely can they support the flexibility needed to be resilient in high winds or with heavy ice loading. Marmon Utility, LLC has designed a more flexible aerial cable spacer design.

Marmon Utility has more than 200 years of experience in the design, engineering, installation, and service of electric cable, cable systems and polymer insulators. They are focused on constant innovation to rid distribution systems of legacy infrastructure and outdated thinking.

Their newly patented aerial cable spacer design achieves higher degrees of freedom in terms of cable movement. This allows the spacer to adjust for the sway and movement of cables in high winds or from inadvertent contact situations. The spacer is designed with the central body, a pair of angle arms, a bottom arm, and an insulator. The two angle arms form an isosceles triangle with the central insulator while the bottom arm extends directly down. Each arm is equipped with a clamp to hold the cables. The clamp’s connection point includes bearings and bushells to increase their freedom of movement. In this way, the cables can sway with less resistance, allowing for an improved lifespan for the spacer while maintaining cable management and protection.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
