New Jersey Patent of the Month – May 2023

Pressurized containers like aerosol cans are widely used in households to dispense various products. These containers can, however, cause harm if they are not handled properly, especially by children who are curious and may spray dangerous products inadvertently. Recognizing the need for child-proofing and improved safety, Pierson Industries Inc. has developed a safety valve locking device. The new child-resistant container can be used by both right-handed and left-handed users without modification.

The aerosol safety cap is designed with a twist lock to be easily locked or unlocked by adults. It attaches to the rim of the can using a collar and valve assembly. A slide member locks with engagement members which extend from opposing ends. Pierson’s invention prevents or reduces the likelihood of a child spraying the contents of an aerosol can. The device includes intricate designs that are not easily operated by children, and it reverts to its locking position automatically once the user has finished spraying the contents from the associated pressurized can. Furthermore, the device is economical and straightforward to manufacture.

Pierson Industries has spent the last 25 years expanding into a major supplier of High-Quality injection molded parts. Along this journey, they have built a reputation designing and building their own molds using CNC equipment and CAD/CAM technology. This growth and experience comes in line with the company’s commitment to innovation, pushing the edge for their clients.
