New Mexico Patent of the Month – November 2023
Pebble Labs Inc is a biotechnology company which harnesses microbes to sustainably protect yields and quality in food production. Harnessing these microbes requires a constant commitment to development. Recently, they have been experimenting with the use of RNase III mutants to produce sRNA in order to control host pathogen infections.
Their innovative patented technology harnesses a distinct sequence encoding an E38A-R107A-R108A RNase III mutant, creating discrete-sized sRNAs. This advancement allows for targeted interference, especially in the essential pathogen genes. The impressive specificity in RNA interference triggers a host’s defense mechanism without DICER enzymes.
Pebble Labs’ approach transcends conventional methods, cutting dsRNA into 22 and 23-nucleotide sRNA fragments. Upon integration with the target host, this prompts an RNA interference response, independent of DICER, fortifying the host’s defense against infections.
Their comprehensive solutions aren’t limited to a single application but can be applied across numerous organisms. This flexible approach ensures a wide spectrum of action, whether for prokaryotic or eukaryotic cells.
Pebble Labs’ innovation is not just about the development of these cells but about the broader applications. Their technology has potential industrial implications, primarily in fighting pathogens and pests that affect plants and animals. Their technology is an essential step in addressing disease and protecting crop health.
Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
