New Mexico Patent of the Month – September 2023

In an era where our daily lives are increasingly reliant on digital technologies, cybersecurity is paramount. The Department of Defense (DOD) recognizes the critical importance of safeguarding information networks, especially when it comes to warfighting and defense missions. The constant threat of cyberattacks and vulnerabilities in mission systems underscores the need for robust system engineering, supply chain risk management, and cybersecurity measures.

One company that’s making significant strides in this field is Metis Technology Solutions, Inc. Their innovative approach addresses the challenges of maintaining compliance with Security Technical Implementation Guides (STIGs), which are crucial for assessing and hardening computer systems and networks against cybersecurity threats.

Traditionally, STIGs have been applied manually, making the system accreditation process time-consuming and labor-intensive. Metis recognized the need for automation in this domain and developed a groundbreaking method to streamline compliance assessments.

Their solution involves a method for determining real-time compliance status with a security guideline standard (SGS), such as a STIG. What sets Metis apart is their use of native command line shells, like BASH or PowerShell, which eliminates the need for a compiler on the target device. This means that even devices without specific software can execute the commands, bypassing common limitations.

Here’s how it works: the selected SGS is decrypted and sent as a command query to the target device within a computer system. The device responds with its compliance status, which is compiled in a database. Metis then generates a comprehensive compliance report, including condition codes like compliant, non-compliant, and more.

The beauty of their system lies in its automation, significantly reducing the time and effort required for compliance assessments. Tasks that used to take days can now be completed in a matter of minutes.

Metis is making waves not only in the military sector, where the DOD has declared cyberspace a new domain of warfare but also in various industries vulnerable to cybercrimes. Their automated approach to compliance assessments enhances security, reduces costs, and allows organizations to focus their resources on critical tasks.
