New York Patent of the Month – December 2022

Voyetra Turtle Beach, Inc. (Turtle Beach), a global gaming accessory leader, has recently been granted a patent for their voice scrambling technology which allows gamers to have private in-game conversations.

When playing on a team, communication is crucial to coordinating the plan and alerting teammates to enemies. Turtle Beach has designed a gaming headset that supports this effort, ensuring team mates can hear each other while opponents cannot. The headset can alternate between “scrambling mode” and “non-scrambling mode” when processing chat audio and microphone audio. The headset uses a key-pair list previously established between the sender and intended receiver. The headset scrambles chat audio, references this key list and, if the receiver’s headset has the matching key, their headset will descramble the audio. Only players on the same team will have the matching key.

Turtle Beach began their journey of innovation back in 1975 as a small company called Octave Electronics which created music and audio-related products like analog music synthesizers, PC sound cards and more. Throughout the company’s 40+ year history, Turtle Beach has continuously raised the standard of quality and innovation to become the #1 brand in gaming audio. In addition to creating the first ever console gaming headset, Turtle Beach has consistently leveraged its audio expertise and drive for innovation to bring groundbreaking features to market first.
