North Carolina Patent of the Month – March 2022

Cryovac, LLC has recently developed an antimicrobial packaging film capable of reducing microbial contamination. The better contamination can be prevented, the longer the shelf life and the less chance of foodborne illness. Similar solutions have been attempted before. However, these solutions have seen limited efficacy. For instance, certain antimicrobial agents begin to degrade when exposed to high temperatures. Even when not degrading, these existing solutions required large quantities of active compounds in order to effectively protect the packaged food.

Cryovac’s solution uses lauric arginate ethyl ester (LAE). Previous attempts using LAE found limitations around its adherence to the packaging material. Cryovac has found that applying LAE on the surface of a thermoplastic film results in an effective and stable antimicrobial coating. Their antimicrobial coating is also reproducible. When combined with the company’s vacuum sealed packaging, this antimicrobial packaging was seen to maintain a low microbial load compared to a package without any coating even after 21 days.

The company strives to create solutions to reduce food waste and improve the sustainability of the global supply chain. An industry leader for more than 75 years, the CRYOVAC® brand is known around the world for innovation, quality, and outstanding service in the development of flexible, primary food package solutions.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify).
