North Dakota Patent of the Month – February 2024

Located in Grand Forks, ND, Aatrix Software Inc. has been developing innovative accounting software solutions since 1986. The company has recently been granted a patent for their automated form creation technology. The patented invention provides an independent and standardized approach to creating and updating data records and types within a computerized form creation and processing system.

Traditionally, updating forms within large monolithic code structures posed significant challenges, especially when changes were frequent. Aatrix identified the need for a dynamic and efficient solution, leading to the development of a novel method. This method involves the creation of a form file template defining the characteristics and attributes of form fields. Additionally, a data file with record types and data types structures the data used to populate the forms.

Key aspects of this invention include the ability to add or modify record types and data points without requiring extensive modifications to the main program’s source code. The introduction of record type and column attributes streamlines the process, allowing users to define specific data and record types during the form creation phase. This alleviates the previous challenges of manual coding and testing, reducing the time required for updates and enhancements.

The AUF Builder, a dedicated tool in this invention, serves as a centralized hub for creating and modifying record types within the AUF database file. Users can seamlessly add or modify record types, making them readily available for form file creation. This eliminates the need for intricate code modifications, bringing efficiency and flexibility to the form creation process.

The impact of this invention is far-reaching, particularly in fields requiring frequent form updates, such as tax reporting. With the ability to add new data points, create new record types, and deprecate existing ones, Aatrix’ invention provides a dynamic solution that adapts to evolving form requirements.
