Ohio Patent of the Month – February 2023
Flexible packaging materials are often preferred as they are less expensive to make, easier to decorate, and can be easily adjusted to suit a range of packages. Unfortunately, these flexible materials are rarely recyclable and add to the plastic waste on the planet. AeroFlexx LLC is set on revolutionizing the packaging industry with AeroFlexx-ability.
Alongside a great pun, their technology is designed to meet all the benefits of flexible packaging while being curbside-recyclable. This means recyclability as defined by The Association of Plastic Recyclers (APR).
The main reason existing flexible packaging has been so difficult to make sustainably, is because they are primarily made from multiple plastic materials. This makes them difficult for recyclers to handle. Additionally, materials used to improve the performance of these packages can also contribute to them not being easily recyclable.
AeroFlexx’s solution is a substantially nylon-free recyclable multilayer package. The material used in the package is designed to have a maximum percentage of less than 5% of ethylene vinyl alcohol (EVOH) barrier layer. This proprietary design uses at least 50% less plastic, offers greater flexibility in size and shape, and requires no molds for efficiency in manufacturing. This optimized ratio of compatibilizers in the packaging formulation ensures that the package meets the standards for recyclability while being easily manufactured using traditional equipment, making it an easy transition for companies that want to switch to more sustainable packaging options.
Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify).
