Ohio Patent of the Month – November 2023

Battle Sight Technologies, LLC develops technology for the frontline, with first responders and warfighters in mind. With advancements in energy generation, innovations like the patent from Battle Sight could redefine how firearms could power themselves.

This concept stems from the thermoelectric effect – the conversion of a temperature difference into electricity – to convert heat from a firearm barrel into electric energy.

The application encompasses an interface that securely fits inside a firearm’s handguard, ensuring that its contact surface clings to the barrel. It’s the seamless connectivity between the interface and the heat source that enables the efficient collection of heat. Moreover, a thermoelectric generator is mounted onto this interface to harness the gathered heat and convert it into electricity.

The output of this system, via a positive and negative lead, can connect to various systems like batteries, circuits, or signal conditioners. The generated electricity has a range of potential uses—either to power components within the firearm or other tools needed on the frontline.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
