Ohio Patent of the Month – September 2021

The need for alternative, clean energy has risen in the past few years, as we see the effects of climate change. The field of clean energy has come a long way, but the industry is still committed to developing novel and innovative solutions. Wind energy is one of the top contenders for clean energy with wind generators capable of providing a safe and clean source of electric power. Star Sailor Energy, Inc. has designed a new wind generator with greater efficiency.

Their wind generator uses blades with biomimetic aerodynamics. Biomimetics refers to designs that mimic or are based on existing biological processes or features, including animals. In this case, the biomimetic aerodynamics element has a rotor with multiple blades. Each blade has a scoop portion that increases the lift of the blade, increasing the rotational force on the rotor and decreasing the drag. This design is based on raptor wings which use feathers radiating to the wing tip to induce a hook. Along with a leading-edge in the avian wing which increases lift, avian wing structure creates the most efficient flight and maneuvering of wind. There are others in the industry who have attempted to increase lift in a vertical axis wind generator, they have all attempted the use of ducting and composite rotors which are complex and expensive manufacturing procedures. Star Sailor Energy’s design is more efficient in both function and manufacture.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
