Oklahoma Patent of the Month – April 2022

A colonoscopy exam is very useful for detecting changes or abnormalities in the large intestine (colon) and rectum. These exams use a probe with a tiny camera at the tip to visualize the internal area. Insufflation of the colon is essential to getting any useful imagery but must be done just right. Any air incontinence will compromise the visualization and maneuverability of the probe. BPEndo, LLC has designed an insufflation retention device (IRD) meant to reduce incontinence and improve patient safety.

Their IRD forms an effective seal while still providing a passageway for the probe by attaching to any scope. The deflated IRD is quickly connected to the scope and inserted into the rectum as usual. Once positioned, the IRD is inflated using a syringe and reaches full inflation and sealant within 30 seconds. The inflation is responsible for the seal, turning any rectum into a fully competent sphincter. Since the scope sits in the center, it is still capable of moving as needed for a colonoscopy without impeding any visual capabilities.

With this patent and their work towards FDA regulatory compliance, the device will soon be ready to aid in colonoscopies everywhere. Inspired by his own experience in practice, BPEndo’s Dr. Holbrook set out to design the IRD to make colonoscopies simpler and more efficient for physicians, which will result in reduced costs and safer patient outcomes.
