Oregon Patent of the Month – May 2021
Curious Company, LLC has created a hybrid reality (HR) based communication system which allows users to use body language and poses to transfer information. Hybrid-reality refers to images that merge real-world imagery with computer imagery superimposed over it. Through a system which occludes pixels, joining virtual and real images, and a Z-buffer technique they can help show or remove images that are hidden from view.
The system draws data from sensors including cameras and microphones. Depending on the purpose of the system, it can use more sensors including barometers, oxygen sensors, pressure sensors and so on. For instance, using the system to help in hazardous environments like responding to an emergency. The system utilizes a trained neural network to properly detect and track movement of human bodies and other objects. The network is trained to recognize a plethora of body poses and uses these to generate responses or commands. So a user communicates with the HR system through body poses, which the sensors track and the processor identifies. In the example of the emergency response scenario, two first responders may use the HR system. This way, even when in separate rooms or low visibility areas, the display screen can indicate proximity to each other, and show movement to keep both users aware. In addition, one first responder can communicate with the other through body poses and signalling. As Curious Company advances this technology the applications just keep expanding.
Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
