Tennessee Patent of the Month – May 2021

Ozone (O3) is a great sanitizer and disinfectant. It’s capable of oxidizing bacteria and viruses using its third oxygen atom, reverting back to regular O2 – making it a very environmentally friendly cleaning agent. Sleep 8 Inc has designed a system to use ozone as a disinfectant in medical devices like CPAP machines. These machines can have hard-to-reach places which are prone to bacteria and mold growth, as they come into contact with bodily fluids.

The system uses an ozone generating device to produce as much ozone as needed. This ozone is then delivered throughout the machine in a sanitizing cycle, recirculating the gaseous mixture across all surfaces. The ozone generator is coupled to the medical device, such as a CPAP machine, through an inlet port, and again through an outlet port. In order to facilitate circulation, the ozone generator will be configured to create an air pressure difference, forcing the ozone into the lower pressure interior of the CPAP. As the ozone flows, it oxidizes bacteria or mold, disinfecting the interior with ease.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify).
