Pennsylvania Patent of the Month – April 2021

Public transportation is a great way to circumvent traffic congestion and improve thea accessibility of a city. However these systems have a common “last mile” problem, where even an extensive system cannot get you directly to your destination and you must do the last stretch by foot. One attempt at solving this problem was the creation of electric roller skates, but these require a certain level of skill to use and also make it difficult to to transition from skating to walking. Nimbus Robotics, Inc. has designed an improved solution – the electric powered shoes.

The bionic shoes are actually an attachment that would be worn over your regular shoes, and can be easily removed. Their design consists of a shoe sole with 6 wheels on the bottom, one set near the front, one near the center, and the last near the heel. This way, whether your weight is positioned near the front or back, you always have four wheels touching the ground. One end has a motor which drives the wheels. The shoes track the user’s gait in real-time to help control speed. These bionic shoes allow the user to keep a normal walking posture for an easy transition. For instance, if you encounter a puddle or need to walk up steps, you can do so as easily as you would in shoes. The bionic attachment is lightweight and easily stored in a backpack when not in use.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify).
