Pennsylvania Patent of the Month – August 2022

An over poured shot or drink can be a sticky mess. While a patron might be happy with an overfilled drink, these quickly add up to liability from overserving and a loss in revenue. In order to protect both the patrons and the books, BarVision LLC has designed a specialized spout that monitors the liquid being dispensed to ensure these pour metrics can be tracked and improved.

Other attempts at smart spout solutions have been created, using spouts that activate when the bottle is tilted. Ofcourse, any experienced bartender knows they will regularly pour a row of shots in one go. This registers as one long pour rather than a group of pours and therefore stores as incorrect data. If the data is wrong, no corrective measures can be taken.

BarVision’s newly patented intelligent spout uses an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) to track its own orientation and movement in a 3D space. These sensor-based spouts track what, when, and how much is poured. This data is then compared to the Point of Sale drink charges using AI technology to identify any problem pours. This data can identify any specific beverages that are problematic (i.e. poor bottle shape or liquid viscosity) or any bartenders that may repeatedly over or under pour. With this data, the bar can improve their accuracy by highlighting what specifics need improving.

The design offers benefits to the bar without any limitations. The wireless design means there is no need to charge the device, while the device itself can easily be moved from one bottle to another once emptied. From improved revenue to reduced liability, BarVision gives any bar owner eyes over each pour even when they take the night off.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify).
