Pennsylvania Patent of the Month – May 2022
Approximately 1 in 10 Americans have diabetes and need to monitor their blood glucose levels. Unfortunately, in order to do so, they are expected to prick their finger to obtain a blood sample for testing. Nobody wants to prick their finger on a regular basis. Basil Leaf Technologies, LLC have developed an alternative, non-invasive blood glucose sensor.
Their non-invasive device analyzes the absorption spectra to determine blood glucose levels. Different components of blood are characterized by different absorption spectra which can act as “signatures” in the analysis of blood composition.
Pulse oximetry is a test used to measure the oxygen level (oxygen saturation) of the blood. This test exploits the difference in absorption spectra of red and infrared light between oxygenated and deoxygenated blood which is then used to calculate the oxygen saturation.
In a similar method to pulse oximetry, this device uses blue and green light to measure absorption wavelengths to calculate blood glucose levels.
The device uses a light source, photodetectors, and a sensor body. It directs light to the body, recaptures the reflected light emanating from the tissue, and begins calculating. The blood glucose levels can be determined in seconds without any invasive blood drawing.
Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
