Rhode Island Patent of the Month – December 2020
Utility equipment can be very expensive, so you want to keep it in its best condition. But with equipment like pumps, it can be hard to tell what’s going on inside. You can’t easily see if there are leaks or if things are clogged. And with environmental factors to consider, it makes it even harder to take care of your equipment. To keep pumps and vacuums functioning at their best, The Bosworth Company developed a remote monitoring system with some automated features for easy maintenance.
The remote monitoring system includes pressure sensors, ambient temperature sensors, and a communication circuit that will send the user updates to their mobile phone. Users can define their own thresholds for the sensors to maintain certain levels. If pressure drops due to a leak, or the ambient temperature dips below the user’s defined threshold, the sensors will detect this change, the pump will automatically turn off, and the communications circuit will send an SMS to the user’s phone to update them that the pump has been turned off. This way, the user can more easily find leaks, and liquids in the pump won’t freeze and stress the vacuum or pump if the ambient temperature is below freezing. If the temperature rises above the threshold, the pump will then automatically turn back on and send another SMS update to the user.
Are you adapting existing technology for a new application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
