Rhode Island Patent of the Month – March 2023

Dronabinol has been used, in recent years, for treatment in chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting in patients who haven’t responded well to conventional anti-emetics. Most often, this pharmaceutical is prepared in soft gelatin capsules and must be refrigerated or stored in a cool environment both during transportation and at a patient’s home. This special care is essential as the compound is prone to oxidative degradation.

Rather than requiring specialized care, Rhodes Technologies has formulated a more stable dronabinol composition, allowing it to be stored and transported at room temperature with no ill effects. The Rhodes Technologies method proposes packaging the dronabinol oral solid dosage form in a container with an oxygen scavenger to prevent oxidative degradation.

The use of oxygen scavengers is not new, but incorporating them directly into the dronabinol composition has been shown to cause unwanted side effects in previous attempts. Rhodes Technologies avoids this by packaging the oral solid dosage form with an oxygen scavenger in its own separate packet. This method allows the composition to remain unchanged and provides the necessary stability to the medication.

This method is not only beneficial for dronabinol but also for other pharmaceuticals that are prone to oxidative degradation. The use of oxygen scavengers provides a way to increase the stability and shelf life of these medications without having to change their composition. This could result in less refrigeration and special storage requirements, which reduces the burden on vendors and patients alike.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
