Rhode Island Patent of the Month – May 2021

Wiring and cable require protection from the elements and sharp objects. These protections take form in conduits, which can be made of a variety of materials. When installing these conduits, you typically need to thread them together with pliers, wrenches, and very specialized fittings. However, there are a variety of conduit types from rigid metal conduits (RMC) to intermediate metal conduits (IMC), and even rigid or flexible plastic conduits. Each of these require specialized fittings, and couplings. Quick Fitting, Inc. decided to design a a new type of electrical conduit fitting that would work on multiple metallic conduit types regardless of type and finish.

Through the use of a fitting body, fastening ring, and a release pusher, the system will be applicable across a variety of conduits. The fastening ring is designed with teeth while the sealing ring provides a waterproof connection. The fastening ring can be secured within the fitting body to facilitate a push-to-connect installation of a metal conduit. The metal conduit is pushed through the release pusher and fastening ring, connecting the conduit to the fastening ring. During this process, the fastening ring teeth are lifted and then lowered to allow them to accommodate RMC and IMC of different sizes. The fastening unit is also equipped with a release tool which can engage the release pusher. As this pusher is engaged, it retracts the teeth allowing the conduit to disconnect from the fitting body when desired.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify).
