South Carolina Patent of the Month – October 2022

Sinusitis, the inflammation of the sinus tissue, is an incredibly common condition impacting approximately 35 million Americans each year. The infection is commonly seen after a cold or allergy flare-up and can be acute or chronic. When facing sinusitis, the inflammation blocks the airway and allows mucus and bacteria to build up. This build up then creates pressure, headaches, and a runny nose. Healthy Humming, LLC has developed a device to treat sinusitis. The technology offers a non-prescription, non-addictive, mess-free congestion relief solution – and its not limited to the sinuses

Marketed as SinuSonic, this newly patented device uses an acoustic vibrator to the sinuses, nasal cavities, or even ear canals. In addition to vibrations, a gas chamber can be used to release a gas with positive pressure to help offset the built up pressure. In the case of sinusitis or nasal congestion, the user simply places the chamber over their nose, turns it on, and breathes in and out as usual.

Healthy Humming based their design on extensive scientific research and evidence that supports the use of positive expiratory pressure (PEP) in congestion relief. In addition, there has been research that suggests that human humming improves sinonasal patency.

The combination of pressure therapy and vibratory input, the nasal passages are opened naturally. The two inputs cause the upper airway to begin opening and mucous to begin moving. Targeting the upper airway creates greater long-term effects. Backed by published clinical trials, Healthy Humming has seen that, when used properly for two minutes twice a day for at least 14 days, more than 80% of participants had improved congestion.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify).
