Tennessee Patent of the Month – December 2023

Computed Tomography (CT) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) are the gold standard for joint imaging. These use segmentation software to generate 3D reconstructions. Unfortunately, creating these models is often time consuming and expensive. TechMah Medical LLC has developed an alternative solution that reduces costs and supports patient outcomes.

The company’s surgical navigation solution allows physicians to navigate the hip using a combination of fluoroscopy and tracking sensors. This combination tracks motion of a body part by mounting a motion sensor onto the body part – specifically the hip. Radiographic images are then taken of the body in various positions within the range of motion. The motion sensor data is then used to pull together a virtual 3D model of the radiographic images with ease. This method is more automated, utilizing patient specific registration to limit the manual effort required in the operating room.

Beyond its immediate applications in healthcare, the implications of this smart bandage extend to remote patient monitoring and telemedicine. The ability to gather continuous, accurate data from wounds remotely can significantly enhance the efficiency of healthcare delivery, especially for those in remote or home-based settings.
