Texas Patent of the Month – March 2022

Wubbers, LLC was founded by a mother-daughter duo with a passion for making jewelry. They found over the years that many tools in the jewelry-making industry were limiting in some way or another and decided to take matters into their own hands. In fact, most of the tools used in the industry were originally designed for other fields like electronics and aeronautics manufacturing. Since then, the duo have designed numerous tools specifically for jewelry.

Recently, they have developed a set of mandrel pliers. Traditionally, jewelers have used tapered steel mandrels to form and fabricate wire or metal shapes in their jewelry. These typically have a tapered edge to allow multiple size pieces to be made using one tool. However, this taper also means it is near impossible to make two pieces the exact same size.

Wubbers’ tool combines this mandrel design with pliers into a single tool. The plier jaws are mandrels. These mandrels do not taper, offering a uniform shape across their length. Not only does this allow multiple pieces of the same size to be made, it also allows for multiple pieces to be worked on at once. Since the plier jaw is one size across it’s length, a wire could be wrapped around it multiple times without any variation in circumference. They have designed these pliers with 5 different shapes to meet nearly any jeweler’s need including round, triangle, square, oval and half round.
