Utah Patent of the Month – January 2023

Loveland Innovations, Inc. is a company focused on bringing meaning to data. Their innovations work to turn inspection data into clarity and action, supporting the property data and analytics community using artificial intelligence and next-level analytics. In support of this mission, the company has patented their new development – a graphical user interface capable of controlling solar ray mapping.

The system assesses properties and rooftops using drones or other unmanned aerial vehicles. The drones capture images of the rooftop, collecting periodic images and measurements of solar irradiance. This data is then analyzed, creating models of solar irradiance by ray-trace modeling the sunlight incident on the roof. This model is recreated by collecting data at varying times of day and throughout the year, creating a full time period. The user interface then offers a method to control the visualization of the model, manipulating resolution and other parameters to understand the variation in solar irradiance.

By tracking and understanding the solar ray exposure of a roof, the user can make informed decisions. For instance, where to place solar panels, or how to most efficiently insulate the roof to mitigate heat loss. The precise data and ability to play with the visualization can help to shave hours off the modeling and designing process.

Loveland Innovations’ technology provides an essential tool for individuals and organizations in the construction, architecture, and renewable energy industries, allowing them to make informed decisions and maximize the potential of their structures.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
