West Virginia Patent of the Month – July 2022

Climate Shelter, LLC was born of the need for stormproof housing in the face of increasing extreme weather events. Ofcourse, with a growing global population, we have also seen a growing demand for energy used in heating and cooling both residential and commercial structures. This increased energy usage further contributes to the strain placed on the environment. Climate Shelter’s goal is to create affordable, energy efficient, and storm proof structures.

Their patented structure uses a vacuous, sealed chamber in the ceiling and along some of the walls. By creating a space where there is no structural material and no gaseous molecules, the structure is built with highly efficient and natural resistance to heat transfer. This resistance mitigates heat loss through both conduction and convection. In order to create and maintain this vacuum, on a low energy and economical basis, Climate Shelter created a novel vacuum apparatus. This device uses a pair of tubes which communicate with the sealed vacuum chamber. Each tube also communicates with each other. As liquid is pumped into one tube, air is released to the environment from that tube and air is drawn from the vacuous sealed chamber in the other tube. As the flow of liquid among the tubes is reversed, the flow of air is reversed as well. This constant flow creates an atmospheric pressure between 8-25 inHg within the sealed chamber.

While this vacuum chamber improves energy efficiency, it also adds stress to the walls. The walls will also face stress from extreme weather events. To combat each of these stresses, the design uses external bracing to build in structural integrity without impacting the resistance to heat flow.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
