Wisconsin Patent of the Month – March 2021

Microbial Discovery Group, LLC believes microbial research and innovation is the future of solving some of the world’s biggest problems. They have been developing a method of using the microbe Bacillus to help improve animal health and performance. Animal gastrointestinal tracts are under a constant attack from bacteria and viruses which come from food, bedding, and the environment in general. While the immune system is quite competent at countering these attacks, it is not perfect. The immune system relies on beneficial bacteria to help strengthen and protect the animal. Using direct-fed microbial (DFM) compositions can help to maintain a normal bacterial profile in the gut – similar to why we eat probiotic yogurt.

DFM contain live microorganisms such as Bacillus strains. This used to be a common tactic among animal owners but has become less efficacious as animal diets have switched to dried pellets. These food compositions have high levels of dried distillers grain solubles (DDGS) which is not easily digested and largely passes directly through the system. Microbial Discovery Group’s DFM increases daily feed intake and gain in animals and improves energy conversion. Their DFM is available as a food or drink additive, or a complete feed, so that it is easy to add into their routine. Overall, introducing DFM improves animal health and performance.

Are you redesigning existing technology? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
