Wisconsin Patent of the Month – March 2023

WiSys Technology Foundation Inc has recently patented a flameless impingement oven. Traditional industrial ovens heat materials using multiple burners and mixing air and fuel, which produces a highly variable combustion environment. This environment is not only harmful to the environment but also energy-consuming and prone to refractory degradation. WiSys’ invention has solved this issue by using flameless combustion to distribute combustion throughout the oven compartment, eliminating temperature spikes and decreasing the formation of nitrous oxide pollutants.

The invention has taken it a step further by using “impingement” style flameless combustion, where the gas and air jets providing the flameless combustion gasses are directed towards the product being heated. This increases the heat transfer rate between the combustion gasses over general turbulent flow, a significant advancement in heating efficiency. This is achieved by directing the fuel jets directly against the product being heated, using a set of separate air jets.

WiSys was established in 2000 and is an independent, nonprofit supporting organization for the UW System. WiSys works hand-in-hand with inventors, researchers and students to facilitate cutting-edge research programs, identify, protect, develop and commercialize discoveries emanating from the research base as well as foster a spirit of innovative and entrepreneurial thinking on the campuses it serves.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
