Wisconsin Patent of the Month – October 2022
JangoBio, LLC, a biotechnology company targeting aging and age-related diseases, has recently patented a novel method for differentiating stem cells into hormone-producing cells. Their approach hinges on the research of hormones and aging. As we grow older, our hormonal balance changes. This change – caused by the loss of ovarian and testicular cells – is the cause for this decline in reproductive hormones, and a direct contributor to age-related diseases.
JangoBio’s solution uses stem cells to restore this hormone balance by regenerating the gonadal tissues lost during aging. In order to support this, a reliable and efficient method of producing these hormone-producing cells is essential.
Their patented method differentiates both stem and post-natal cells using inducing factors in vitro. Specifically, their method uses the transcriptional factor SF-1 – an orphan intranuclear receptor expressed in the genital and adrenal gland-type steroid hormone-producing cells; or Wilm’s tumor protein (WT-1). These transcription factors are stimulated by cAMP which participates in the growth and differentiation of cells. So, the stem cells are stimulated by these inducing factors in vitro which are then stimulated by the naturally occurring cAMP, effectively differentiating the stem calls and guiding their growth into hormone-producing cells. These cells then contribute to a regulated hormone balance, preventing the onset of age-related diseases.
The company is currently testing their organoid products in animal-based clinical trials, and working towards pre-clinical studies for human use in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease and natural hypogonadism.
Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
