Wyoming Patent of the Month – January 2022

The medical community has been advancing towards augmented reality (AR) as a key communicative device. It can be difficult to explain medical images to patients when they don’t have a good understanding of anatomy to start with. Using augmented reality can provide the means necessary to make the information more relatable or understandable to the patient.

McGinley Education Innovations, LLC has been working towards advancing the bridge between medical imaging and AR. Their system shows real-time 2D representations of the medical imaging data into a 3D space. This is achieved using a single stage processing of the video data from the medical imaging device. This processing method reduces any latency and more closely achieves real-time connections.

The system has more benefits than simply conveying information to the patient. The medical professional no longer needs to look back and forth between the patient and the medical imaging screen and can instead wear AR goggles for a more ergonomic position. By overlaying the medical imaging over the patient, the medical professional can visualize both the image and treatment site at one time. Dr. McGinley and his team are constantly conducting research to bring innovation to the medical industry and to improve patient care.
