Arkansas Patent of the Month – July 2022

When experiencing acute or chronic pain, doctor’s often consider the patient’s history before prescribing any treatment. From frequency to intensity, the history of pain can indicate patterns or suggest potential causes. Unfortunately, our memories are fallible and trying to remember exactly when we had pain and to what degree may not be easy. Nanolume, LLC has developed an application to track pain over time with ease and consistency.

The application acts as a diary and guides the user through the entry of data including pain type, intensity, location and duration. This data is represented with a graphical pain image superimposed over a human body. For instance, intense pain in the foot could be shown with red highlights over the correct foot. There are different kinds of pain – burning, aching, throbbing, allodynia and so on. Different graphics are used to represent these clearly, so you may indicate multiple pain types in any spot.

However, getting people to track these details consistently can be difficult and so the application must make the process as easy as possible. The user can quickly indicate the location by simply drawing a circle on the screen around the afflicted area, ensuring there are no language barriers or limitations if the user doesn’t know the anatomical term. The data can be shared directly with the user’s physician, only by their authorization, ensuring their doctor has up to date information to guide treatment protocols.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
