California Patent of the Month – November 2022

Gathering real-time information can be crucial to healthcare. That’s why doctor’s track heart rate and vitals during procedures. Ceribell, Inc. is working to achieve this same capability with our brain signals. Unfortunately, brain signals are significantly more complex. Fortunately, tracking their data can have huge impacts on understanding a patient’s status. These signals can help track abnormal brain function or monitor spatial and temporal progression of brain diseases.

Conventional methods of tracking a brain’s electrical activity – such as EEG signals – require a great deal of resources from specialized technicians to specialized doctors and technology. Ceribell is set on developing a solution that makes this trackinga more accessible and reasonable option.

Their solution is a wearable device for sonifying and recording brain signals. Electroencephalogram signals are collected via electrodes, representing brain activity. These signals are digitized using an analog-to-digital converter. A series of filters help to remove noise and standardize the signals. The device is easy to set up and use, not requiring any specialized equipment. Instead, any clinician can set up the device and interpret the initial results.

Ceribell was founded in 2014 by two faculty members at Stanford University who were frustrated by these conventional and limited EEG systems. Being granted this patent brings them one step closer to making their EEG process widely accessible, more efficient, and more cost-effective. With these features in place, diagnostic and treatment outcomes should improve.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
