Connecticut Patent of the Month – March 2023
Nanoionix LLC was founded in 2020 to develop advanced materials that protect the environment and enhance our quality of life. The company has recently patented their self-decontaminating antimicrobial technology, making it easier to combat the spread of infections in healthcare settings. The technology behind these materials is essential given that 1 in 25 patients in the United States get hospital-induced infections, and the most common mode of transmission is by direct contact with contaminated surfaces. While disinfectants and sanitizers have been effective, they require ongoing engagement and reapplication, which is an added burden on healthcare workers.
Nanoionix’s technology, marketed as EcoCer™, is built using mixed metal oxide, mixed metal sulfide, or mixed metal oxysulfide coatings that have antimicrobial properties without the need for external sources of energy. These coatings have proven effective against various bacterial, fungal, and enveloped viral pathogens, including coronaviruses such as HCoV-NL63, a surrogate for SARS-CoV-2. These coatings can be applied to a range of surfaces, including fomite substrates, and are effective against a range of pathogens without the need for external energy sources such as UV lamps.
One significant advantage of the Nanoionix technology is that it eliminates the need for ongoing disinfecting efforts. The self-decontaminating coatings are long-lasting and are not as easily degraded or leached compared to other antibacterial coatings that incorporate copper and/or silver in metallic, ionic, and nanoparticle forms. Further, the Nanoionix coatings pose no health concerns related to physical irritation and cell toxicity, even when the metals are in nanoparticle form.
Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
