Delaware Patent of the Month – November 2022

Domestic animals are often housed in stalls, pens, cages and so on. Depending on the setup, bedding might be used to offer more comfort and to absorb the animal’s waste. This absorbance helps to keep a separation between the animal and waste which is crucial for preventing irritations and disease. Large animals, like horses, require massive quantities of bedding for the sheer fact that they are larger and produce more waste. Unfortunately, this soiled waste is single use and contributes to both air and water pollution if not disposed of properly. Equine Eco Green, LLC has developed a system to reprocess animal bedding while maintaining the needed sanitation.

The system first separates soiled animal bedding in a shaker, sending the bulk of the manure to a holding tank. The remaining bedding is then cleaned and rinsed and sent through a color restoration process. This clean and rinse process uses additional shakers and cleaning agents. As this happens, any wastewater is collected and sent through a wastewater processing facility.

Following this, the bedding material is dried and repurposed to bedding (again), fertilizer, or a compacted product. The compacted product is typically pellets or logs used for burning and tinder. Regardless of the final product, the bedding is fully cleaned and sanitized. Converting this previously single-use product into a reusable and recyclable product has the potential to make a large impact on the environmental footprint of animal care.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify).
