Idaho Patent of the Month – October 2023

Innovations in medical technology have the power to save lives. A Flow Regulated, Time-Cycled (FRTC) high-frequency percussive ventilator is designed to deliver intermittent percussive ventilation to a patient’s airway. Unfortunately, original designs for this system were designed for use by trained medical professionals and were cluttered with knobs, buttons, and analog displays. Recently, Percussionaire Corporation has been granted a patent for an FRTC ventilator with improved and streamlined design, making it accessible even to nominally trained medical professionals.

One of the key features of this ventilator is its color-coded lines and couplers, which make it effortless for users to attach the correct lines quickly. The control-monitor comes with specially configured indicia and control dials or knobs, making it intuitive for nominally trained professionals to adjust settings. This simplified approach extends to the operational display screen, which presents critical information in an easy-to-understand manner.

The percussive ventilation breathing head is designed for ease of use and cleaning, making it suitable for multiple patients. The breathing head administers intermittent percussive ventilation to a patient’s airway, helping maintain respiratory function effectively.

The FRTC ventilator is highly portable, making it ideal for rapid deployment during medical emergencies, such as epidemics. Nominally trained medical professionals can quickly grasp the connection process, initial patient control settings, and in-use patient monitoring due to the user-friendly interface.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify).
