Indiana Patent of the Month – May 2021

Doctor’s offices and hospitals usually employ as many sanitary and protection features as they can between patients. Some places even have seats with a paper cover that  is changed between patients. One device which is often overlooked in this process is the stethoscope. It’s used on nearly all patients and is rarely sanitized between. A study sampled 150 stethoscopes and found 133 of them had the bacteria responsible for staph infections. Plastic sleeves or barriers might offer some prevention but are not optimal in a fast-paced environment. Pulmonary Apps, LLC have developed a wireless stethoscope to help prevent cross-infection.

Through the use of a wireless sensor, the bodily sounds can be processed and transmitted to the listening device. The wireless sensor is made of a disposable adhesive pad with a microphone. The system also uses an amplifier and a noise filter. These can be set to specific wavelengths so that bodily noise can be filtered out, while the desired wavelength is amplifeied. For instance, pulmonary and cardiac sounds are different wavelengths, and can often obstruct each other with a regular stethoscope. Through the use of this disposable, one-time use wireless stethoscope, examinations can be improved and cross-contamination reduced.
