Iowa Patent of the Month – March 2022

Design Mill, Inc. has recently worked to innovate an interpretive projector system which combines augmented reality with moveable media and depth-sensing capabilities to create a mixed reality platform for interactive applications.

The design uses a 3D sensor that forms the 3D measurement sensing field over a modifiable medium. THis medium could be anything from a toy to a person to a car. A sensor and imaging system interacts with the modifiable medium, sensing the medium’s 3D structure. The imaging device then projects over the medium. A projector is then used to project the desired image onto the exterior of the member. Interaction with the member can be sensed using the sensor and a level of augmented reality achieved.

For instance, if applied in a dining area, the sensor may detect the table and all guests (who may come and go) as the medium. The projector could be used to augment the dining experience, projecting menus and such. As the guest “interacts” with the menu (i.e. selects a meal etc.), the computer registers this interaction and determines next steps. Of course, the applications are nearly endless, limited only by our imagination.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
