Iowa Patent of the Month – November 2022

Dogs are a great companion. From cuddles to protection, they give their all to their owners. Sometimes a dog is trained to act as a security measure, scaring away intruders. Other times, a dog simply barks of their own accord. In either case, the dog’s movement and noise may trigger alarm systems. VetMeasure, Inc. has developed an animal harness that communicates with security systems to prevent this unwanted triggering.

When an alarm system is triggered, it promptly communicates with the animal’s harness to determine if the dog was the cause of the trigger. This check is conducted by determining if the harness indicates the animal is actively moving and nearby the triggered sensor. If so, the alarm trigger is ignored and the alarm isn’t sounded.

In addition, the harness can track vital signs and collect the dog’s health status. This information is processed through smart algorithms that detect changes in the dog’s level of excitement, agitation, stress, and even anxiety. Behavioral modeling of the animal can help to determine if the dog is witnessing a security event, allowing the officials to have a more comprehensive dataset to work from.

VetMeasure is an animal health technology company with expertise in harness designs. Their MeasureON! Harness design was originally developed to track animal vitals in an effort to save the lives of dogs. The harness could alert veterinarians when a dogs’ vital signs enter a critical state, preventing further disease or sickness. By expanding the harnesses capabilities to include these security capabilities, dogs can remain both comfortable and protected.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify).
