Kansas Patent of the Month – November 2023

ViroVax, LLC is a biotechnology company based in Kansas. Their focus is on the development of vaccines and therapeutics to protect and treat people from infectious diseases such as Zika, West Nile, Dengue, and SARS-CoV-2.

Recently, the company has been granted a patent for their proprietary antiviral compound formulation. This compound addresses gaps in available treatments, providing potential solutions for patients that previously had no other options.

Viral infections establish a stronghold in hosts by replication and evading the immune system. ViroVax’s compound works by inhibiting specific stages of the viral life cycle. The standard viral life cycle begins when enough viral particles enter a host and begin replication without being neutralized by the host’s immune system. In a simplified description, the life cycle includes being generated by a host, translocating to a new infection site to begin the process again. While a virus goes through many more complex steps, it’s these two high level life cycle stages that are targeted by ViroVax’s compounds.

By inhibiting a virus at every step of its life cycle, the virus is prevented from spreading and causing further damage. Currently, the company is focused on specific formulations to target viral infections that are often untreated; but their approach has the potential to address any virus.
