A key part of any manufacturing or production process is the packaging of the end product. Packaging is often expected to be waterproof, stabilizing, and secure enough to be transported. Some methods use wrapping machines to properly stretch, dispense, and wrap the packaging material around the load. Regardless of method, the industry measures wrapping effectiveness via “containment force” which is the cumulative force on the load by the packaging material – otherwise known as how tightly packed it is. This measurement is affected by the number of layers of packaging material, thickness and strength of the material, and how pre-stretched it is. A constant source of uncertainty in this industry is how to achieve consistent containment force across the load. Lantech LLC has developed a stretch wrapping machine with automated load profiling to make packaging more consistent and efficient.
This automatic load profiling is done by optimizing the wrapping operation performed with a stretch wrapping machine. The machine determines the density parameter for a load which indicates load stability. This measurement is then used to set control parameters that best match the load. It also detects any deviations from the norm – for instance a top sheet or non-smooth top surface may need different wrapping parameters. The system then uses a rotating arm-type wrapping apparatus to roll the stretch packaging material around the load.
