Missouri Patent of the Month – April 2021

SentiAR, Inc. is on a mission to transform interventional procedures for both the patient and clinician using augmented reality (AR). They specifically are developing 3D AR platforms with holographic visualizations which are able to “float” over the patient, displaying the patent’s actual anatomy. Recently, to complement this advanced system, they have been designing a system using stickers and AR in these interventional procedures.

The stickers are designed for use in security, device registration, and presenting graphics and data through AR. The devices used in these procedures often have strict requirements around cybersecurity and patient confidentiality, which usually limits the ease of use.

The sticker system generates an encryption key unique to the individual sticker with the procedure registration information. The clinician wears a head-mounted device (HMD) – similar to the headgear you’ve seen with virtual reality video games. The HMD registers the encryption key and can either grant access to the equipment and information or, if the HMD registers that the key has been used by another device for a different medical procedure, it determines not to use that encryption key for the medical procedure.

For graphics, the sticker system would register the image of a sticker which contains a fiducial marker. The system processes the sticker and determines the location of the associated AR HMD The system determines the position of the sticker relative to the HMD and provides 3D holographic graphics for presentation. SentiAR continues to develop unique technology to advance the medical world with augmented reality.

Are you developing new software for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
