Nebraska Patent of the Month – July 2023

SecureSky, Inc. was founded in 2018 with a mission of developing the technology needed to protect clients’ cloud applications, services, and infrastructure.

Cloud-based systems, Operation Technology (OT), and Internet of Things (IoT) devices are vulnerable to various security risks that can have detrimental effects on the integrity and functionality of these systems. To address these risks, SecureSky has developed an innovative method for automated cloud security management. By detecting risks to cloud infrastructure, applications, and connected devices, and adaptively responding to these risks, SecureSky aims to provide comprehensive protection for cloud environments.

The method revolves around tracking identifiers in cloud computing transactions. Transactions are initiated within the cloud environment using unique identifiers, such as user IDs or account IDs. These transactions trigger the generation of data sets by different services within the cloud computing environment. The data sets contain multiple identifiers associated with the transactions, and the method automatically determines whether specific identifiers correspond to each other. If a correspondence is established, the method associates the corresponding identifiers and identifies the relationship between the services involved in the transactions.

One key aspect of the method is the ability to update the security model based on the identified relationships between services. This ensures that security controls can be adapted to effectively address the risks detected in the cloud environment. By continuously monitoring and analyzing the data sets generated during transactions, SecureSky’s method provides real-time insights into the security posture of the cloud infrastructure.

To validate the security model, synthetic testing techniques are applied to proactively discover identity linkages, relationships, and transaction flows within the distributed cloud system. This allows for a comprehensive understanding of the system characteristics, which forms the basis for developing and updating the security model.

SecureSky’s approach to cloud security management offers several advantages. It provides automated risk detection and adaptive response mechanisms, allowing for timely remediation of potential vulnerabilities. Moreover, the method facilitates dynamic security model updates, ensuring that the cloud environment remains protected against evolving threats. By leveraging innovative techniques and advanced analytics, SecureSky’s method enhances the overall security posture of cloud-based systems, mitigating risks and safeguarding critical data.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
