Nebraska Patent of the Month – March 2024

MP Global Products LLC was founded to produce high-performing products from recycled materials, bringing sustainability and beauty to the flooring industry. Recently, the company has secured a patent for a new universal membrane to be installed between subfloor and floor tiles.

Imagine a floor membrane that not only provides support and stability but also allows for effortless movement of floor tiles relative to the subfloor. At the heart of this invention lies a design that facilitates easy installation and adaptability. The universal membrane consists of a base layer with a series of studs and sidewalls, forming pockets that accommodate the studs. What sets this invention apart is its ability to be divided into two distinct portions: a base membrane and a cover membrane. These portions can then be seamlessly coupled together, with the studs of one portion fitting snugly into the pockets of the other.

One of the standout features of this floor structure is its versatility. Not only does it provide a stable base for floor tiles, but it also allows for movement between the tiles and the subfloor. This is achieved through a clever arrangement of studs and sidewalls, which permit flexibility while maintaining structural integrity.

The universal membrane offers practical benefits beyond its innovative design. For instance, it can accommodate heating cables between its sidewalls, providing an efficient solution for floor heating systems. Additionally, its rubber-like material offers flexibility and durability, ensuring long-term performance and reliability.

Installation of this floor structure is a straightforward process, involving the placement of the base membrane onto the subfloor and the coupling of the cover membrane to it. Once installed, floor tiles can be laid on the cover membrane, secured in place with tile adhesive.

The ease of replacement makes this invention an attractive option for maintenance and renovation projects. Should the need arise to replace floor tiles, the cover membrane can be effortlessly removed by hand, allowing for quick and hassle-free tile replacement.
