New Hampshire Patent of the Month – May 2022

After getting a new piercing, keeping the area clean and bacteria free is essential. Unfortunately, you’re also not meant to touch the piercing too much as this can cause irritation, inflammation, and introduce bacteria. These are two confounding actions though as you cannot clean the spot without touching it. Some of the normal at home cleaning methods involve Q-tips or cotton balls, but these can get stuck on and pull the piercing. With this in mind, PurePierce, Inc. has designed a tool capable of cleaning a two sided piercing – such as an ear or nose piercing – with a more gentle and safe touch.

There have been attempts at piercing cleaning devices in the industry. One tool uses pressure to push fluid through the piercing, effectively removing debris and bacteria. However, when dealing with new or healing piercings, the jewelry cannot be removed without risking infection, making the pressure washer effectively useless until the piercing heals.

PurePierce’s design is a handheld device with two nozzles. The user positions the device so that one nozzle is on each side of the piercing without actually touching the jewelry. A cleaning fluid is pushed out of each nozzle, soaking and cleaning the piercing with a gentle flow. The fluid itself is sterile and able to kill microorganisms and remove debris from around the piercing. This provides a low-contact and reliable cleaning method that won’t cause irritation or inflammation. The design also allows for only an economical volume of cleaning solution to be used, meaning less waste with more efficiency.
