New Jersey Patent of the Month – July 2023
Intelligent Material Solutions Inc. is directing rare-earth materials towards improved transportation safety. The rare-earth materials are incorporated in patented optically-active photonic Intelligent Material ® in pavement marking and guidance systems. This then interacts with the newly patented cooperative guidance system to deliver information to visually impaired individuals by interacting with equipped white canes.
The system offers a simple method, using complex technology, for vehicles and pedestrians to determine their location by sensing selected coatings on roadways, sidewalks, and other paved surfaces. Sensors are equipped or mounted to vehicles and white canes. One sensor type is designed to excite rare-earth materials, like phosphors. Another sensor type is capable of detecting the emission of these excited phosphors. By utilizing different crystalline rare earth phosphors with varying decay times, the cane or vehicle can absorb infrared light and emit distinguishable signals. The system also incorporates GPS technology, enabling precise geolocation and further improving situational awareness for visually impaired individuals.
By tracking pedestrians and vehicles, the system creates an intelligent network where vehicles can communicate with the road infrastructure, enhancing traffic safety and efficiency. This could be particularly useful in advancing autonomous vehicles.
Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
